How Myofascial Release can help during pregnancy

So, first off, what the IS Myofascial Release?
Well, fascia is the new buzz word in the health & fitness industry at the moment. It’s the all-encompassing web of connective tissue that supports our bodies. From the adipose layer under our skin
that holds fat & gives us our shape & insulation, to the layer that wraps our muscles to give them shape &
then becomes tendon & ligaments, to the web that actually holds our organs in place.

It is a highly sensory ever-changing matrix that, it is now being realised that we actually wouldn’t be able to
move or function without.
In an ideal world this tissue should be hydrated & fluid but modern life makes this very difficult so, more
often that not it becomes dehydrated, sticky & restricted.

Pregnacy is no exception. In fact, the massive changes that your body goes through can make old fascial
restrictions feel even worse.

That tight shoulder you’ve always suffered from suddenly get worse, moves down your arm & then you’re
diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel syndrome. That tight lower back? It turns up in your hip, then down your leg & slowly becomes sciatica.

Myofascial release is a type of massage that works on that fascial layer slowly melting, soothing &
releasing. It really gets to the nitty gritty of the problem as we chase the restrictions through the body to
their source.

Traditional massage actually goes straight through this layer. Still helpful but not as long lasting as it
could be, I tend to use a mixture of fascia work & deeper massage with my pregnancy clients.
That way, they get the best of both worlds.
